It almost (but not quite) makes up for me having to deal with calls for 5 hours yesterday…
Edit: Just checked Twitter…apparently it’s already known. Damn you social media!

Heavy Sunday traffic on the Malahat leads to frustration

Victoria, B.C. – Southbound traffic on the Malahat highway into Victoria Sunday evening slowed to a crawl, and even to a complete stop at times.

The slow-down appears to have been the result of large numbers of Victoria-area residents returning home rather than a specific accident, said West Shore RCMP Cpl. Cory Bayda, who was among those caught in the traffic.

“I was coming back around 6 p.m., and I figured I would be back in 40 minutes from Duncan,” said Bayda today. “We get near Shawnigan and it just stopped — I figured there was an accident.”

But Bayda spoke with officers who were working yesterday evening and checked police files, and said there were no reports of any accidents in the West Shore portion of the Malahat.

“I think it was just super heavy volume,” he said. “For all we know, somebody may have broke down, and took them five or 10 minutes to get pushed off. Even with that amount of volume, if that many people stop and start again, it takes a couple hours to deal with.”

It was the worst traffic Bayda has seen on the Malahat in his two years in the area, and came on a day when Victoria experienced record-breaking heat. On Twitter, people vented their frustrations about the traffic jam.

“Malahat + Sunday = Rage,” posted isleofchris.

“The Malahat smells like hot brakes. Gross! PS I want to go home!,” tweeted emilyamily.

“drove the Malahat today … big [expletive] mistake … it crawled all the way back from Mill Bay to Langford,” said sylviab1.

Some of the online blame for the backlog was directed toward the Nanaimo2Victoria Cycling Challenge, which took place on Sunday, but Kyle Ullrich, one of the ride’s organizers, said the 150-plus riders reached downtown by 4 p.m. and wouldn’t have caused the evening backlogs.

“[The traffic jam] was hours after we were there,” said Ullrich, who said the group would have only impacted Malahat traffic up until 3 p.m. “We always stop at the top [of the Malahat] to allow southbound traffic an opportunity to blow through. There are some parts of that climb where it narrows to single lane, so you do see traffic build up, but it’s all controlled by police. If it impacts somebody for 15 minutes, we apologize for the delay, but at the end of the day there’s a bigger thing at play.”

That charity ride raised more than $25,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

An update!

August 15, 2010

Hokay, so I know this is all funny stuff and MSN excerpts but I’mma go ahead and hijack it to link to an update on things so far in Halifax.  Go: here.  I’ll probably put another update in a day or so with some of the more fun things I’ve done this week, that entry is more of a state of the union kind of deal.

Now, for something with a little stronger BFC flavour:

Morbid, I know

This guy was on the porch when I got home from the gym (SURPRISE! I WENT TO THE GYM!) yesterday and I had to take a picture.  Just the way he’s laid out all still (duh) and the leaf in his mouth.  Artsy killin’!
